Error Code P0507

Moderate Issue
DTC Code P0507 indicates that the Idle Control System RPM is higher than expected. This occurs when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the idle speed exceeds the target by 200 RPM or more, based on signals from the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors.

What symptoms indicate Error Code P0507?

  • Engine Light ON: The check engine light or service engine soon warning light is illuminated, indicating a problem with the idle control system.
  • Engine Hard to Start: The engine may be difficult to start, which can be linked to an idle control system malfunction.
  • Rough or Erratic Idle Speed: The engine may experience rough or erratic idle speed, often due to the idle control system maintaining a higher RPM than expected.

What causes OBD code Error Code P0507?

  • The throttle body may be dirty, causing improper air flow and resulting in higher RPMs than expected.
  • The electric throttle control actuator could be misadjusted or damaged, leading to incorrect idle speed control.
  • A faulty electric throttle control actuator might not regulate the throttle position accurately, causing elevated idle RPMs.
  • An intake air leak can introduce unmetered air into the engine, affecting the idle speed.
  • Poor electrical connection to the Intake Air Control (IAC) valve can disrupt its function, leading to higher idle RPMs.

How to fix OBD code Error Code P0507?

  • Initial Inspection: Check for any vacuum leaks in the intake system. Inspect hoses and connections for cracks or disconnections.
  • Throttle Body Cleaning: Clean the throttle body to remove any carbon build-up that may affect idle control. Ensure the throttle plate moves freely.
  • Idle Speed Adjustment: Adjust the engine idle speed to the manufacturer's specifications using a scan tool or manual adjustment if applicable.
  • Erase DTC Code: Clear the P0507 code using a diagnostic scanner and perform a test drive to see if the code returns.
  • Electric Throttle Control Actuator Inspection: If the code reappears, inspect the Electric Throttle Control Actuator for proper operation. Replace if necessary.
